ABA’s Winter 2024 Reading List
Cozy up with a book recommendation from ABA this winter! Here are our favorite books we read this year — and with our team members’ variety of backgrounds and interests, there’s sure to be something for everyone!
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
I first heard of the book through its series on Apple TV series - which caught my ear because Nico Muhly composes the score. The show is beautiful to watch and listen to and I just couldn’t wait a second to find out what happens next, so I turned to the book and was glad I did. The book is a heartbreaking exploration of family, tradition, and the depth of human integrity despite profound loss. The internal workings of these characters are worth the read. And, if the length of the book should dissuade you from indulging (it’s over 500 pages), I highly recommend the show (it’s very different in its approach and is stand-alone in its own right - but you’ll probably end up reading the book anyway).
Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
Prepare to be psychologically thrilled and chilled!
- Kate Donnelly, Chief Customer & Marketing Offier
The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
The fascinating perspective of a female midwife in 1800's rural New England
Watching Over Her by Jean-Baptiste Andrea
The book touches on the power of art and the source of one's inspiration.
Le Barman du Ritz - Philippe Collin
A story of life under occupation, depicting how some people choose to survive and fight back in small and big ways, while others opt to collaborate.
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
Trapped in a misogynistic world of science in the 50s-60s, a female chemist creates a unique talk show where she brings chemistry into cooking, elevating the act of cooking and connecting to the often neglected and undermined female/ household viewer.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.
A playful yet intense novel about the platonic love that blossoms between two friends against the backdrop of video game development. The line between reality and the fantasy world of gaming is blurred, and the reader has a window into the genius behind the creation of video games that have captured so many imaginations.
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
Demon Copperhead is the story of Demon, a boy whose fortunes turn from bad to worse, as he struggles to survive as a victim of child poverty, foster care, and the opioid crisis in Appalachia. It is the brilliant retelling of Dickens' David Copperfield. You will find yourself rooting for Demon at every turn, and intensely praying that he will beat the odds so devastatingly set against him.
We look forward to hearing what books you pick up this season!
