Board and Governance Practices

As we shift into the second half of the calendar year, we wanted to learn from arts and cultural leaders about the state of their current governing boards, the impact of their board fundraising and any potential plans to change governance practices to further the impact and performance of organizational trustees.

Highlights from the survey include:

  • More than half of respondents reported that their boards are at 80% or more of their capacities.

  • The two most common topics for which arts and cultural organizations have dedicated board committees are finance/auditing and governance/nomination.

  • Three-quarters of participating organizations require financial contribution to be eligible for board service; for those without, nearly half have recently removed the requirement.

  • Half of all responding organizations have made board-specific commitments to DEI&A and adjusted their recruitment processes to diversify their boards.
